Who We Are

Friends of Josiah Smith Tavern, Inc. (“Friends”) was formed in the summer of 2015 by a group of individuals interested in restoring the Josiah Smith Tavern and attached barn and connector buildings (together the “Tavern”).  Included in the group are people who have been working to maintain and rehabilitate this historically significant complex of buildings for over a decade.

In 2015 Friends’ proposal for the re-use of the Tavern was recommended by the Town’s Josiah Smith Tavern & Old Library Working Group after a Statement of Interest process that also recommended the re-use of the adjacent Old Library as the Weston Arts and Innovation Center (“WAIC”).  Because the Town of Weston’s Library Department was one of the proponents of the WAIC, no further public bidding process was necessary, but a second Request for Proposals round was necessary in the case of the Tavern.  Friends was the only bidder to respond to the Request for Proposals for the Tavern in September of 2016.

Friends is a Massachusetts charitable corporation, and qualified for tax-exempt status under §501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in February of 2017.  Contributions are deductible to the maximum extent permitted by law.
